I wish for you a thousand suns

“If you are a writer, you must write.”
- Nicole Gulotta of Eat This Poem.

Write what? you may ask.

I have no English major to boast of, no books in my name to push in your face, nor compilation of essays published for the world to see.

But just like a fish innately knows how to swim, or how a butterfly learns to fly as it transforms from a caterpillar in its cocoon, there is something stirring in me, and I know I must write.

Scribbles on notepads, quotes on a post-it, Word documents containing half-written drafts, all of these I do, anything that involves concepts first thought out and then turned into words, written, not spoken.

Years ago I used to write poetry, as a side hobby, nothing I dedicated a lot of time to.

Finally, after a very long hiatus, my inspiration has been ignited again.

“I wish for you a thousand suns” is a poem dedicated to someone I love very much, and conveys my deepest desires for this person.

***

The only thing harder than seeing a loved one free-falling into despair is to actually be in that position yourself.

The only thing worse than watching someone else’s hopes crushed and giving up on themselves is having your own dreams come crashing down on you, wiping out all yearning for something better to come.

And because I’ve seen how hard it is as a bystander, I can imagine how much tougher it must be, for you.

This is the first poem I’ve written in years, and I’m dedicating this to you, because you inspired me.

I wish for you a thousand suns.

I wish for you a thousand suns

I wish for you a thousand suns
(Buenos Aires, February 28, 2013)

I wish for you bright sunshine days
and a lifetime of contagious laughter.
I wish for you easy joy
and a happy ever after.

I wish for you a tendency
to look on the bright side,
the way our hair naturally parts
to the left or to the right.

I wish for you a troop of angels
to guide your every step -
people who cannot let you down
or make you sigh or cause you to frown.

I wish for you to wake each morning
to happy beautiful tunes,
and that strangers give way to you
in long and winding queues.

I wish for you a thousand suns
to light your darkest nights,
so when you wake up in the morning
your eyes shine like little bright lights.

I wish you’d see the beauty
of your life and soul,
and live so fully
it spills like an overflowing bowl.
