What is Garlic Bread?
Since I was a little girl in Singapore, I’ve been a big fan of garlic bread – I first tried it at Western restaurants when they would serve us baskets of freshly toasted garlic bread before the main course, and the aroma of fragrant garlic and butter brings me back to my childhood.
Garlic bread, if you’ve never tried this tasty and delightful appetizer, is basically pieces of bread (often the French bread that’s called baguette) spread with fresh minced garlic and butter or olive oil, and often includes fresh herbs such as chopped parsley.
The garlic butter-smeared bread is later toasted until crispy and served as an delicious appetizer or the perfect side dish. Soooo good!
Is Garlic Bread Gluten-Free?
Traditionally, garlic bread is made with normal wheat bread (which contains gluten), and hence garlic bread is normally not safe for Celiacs or those with gluten allergies or intolerances.
Is Garlic Bread Dairy-Free?
Most garlic bread recipes use regular butter to make the garlic-butter spread, so it is usually not dairy-free not lactose free.
However, because I’m a huge fan of garlic bread, I wanted to make a gluten-free and vegan version of garlic bread.
Why This Recipe Works:
- Simple Ingredients: All you need to make this homemade garlic bread from scratch is just 4 ingredients that you can easily get at the local grocery stores (hey, you might even already have them on hand!).
- Super Easy to Make: It really doesn’t get any easier than this – mix the garlic, parsley and melted butter together, then spread the butter on the bread and toast! A delicious and tasty appetizer ready in just 20 minutes!
- Totally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free & Vegan: The best part is that this easy garlic bread recipe is 100% gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan, which means that even those with Celiac disease or gluten or lactose intolerances, or those on a vegan diet can enjoy this simple recipe without issues!
Ingredients You’ll Need:
Here’s a visual overview of the ingredients required for this easy gluten-free garlic bread recipe.
(For exact measurements, please scroll down to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.)
Recipe Notes + Substitutions:
- Baguette: I used a gluten-free baguette to keep this garlic bread gluten-free. Alternatively, if you are not Celiac or gluten-intolerant, you may also use a normal baguette instead. If you don’t have a French baguette, you may also use your favorite gluten-free bread instead.
- Butter: I used vegan butter (dairy-free butter) to keep the recipe dairy-free. You can also use olive oil if you prefer. Alternatively, if you are not lactose-intolerant, feel free to use normal butter or ghee instead.
- Parsley: I like adding fresh chopped parsley for a contrast in color and flavor. If you are not keen on parsley, feel free to leave it out.
- Garlic: For best results, I definitely recommend using minced fresh garlic cloves (as opposed to dehydrated minced garlic or garlic powder) as the garlic flavor will be stronger and more aromatic. I like garlic so 3 cloves work for me, but you can always reduce the amount of garlic if you prefer a milder taste.
How to Make Homemade Gluten-Free Garlic Bread (Step by Step):
1. Preheat Oven
Preheat the oven to 360F.
2. Cut Baguette into Half
Cut the baguette lengthwise into two halves.
3. Prepare Garlic-Parsley Seasoning
In a small bowl, melt the dairy-free butter and mix in the chopped garlic and half the chopped parsley to get your homemade garlic butter.
4. Brush Bread with Garlic Parsley Butter
Brush the baguette halves with the garlic and parsley butter mixture (brush generously so the butter goes all the way till the edges of the bread).
(TIP: If you have any leftover garlic butter, store it in a small airtight container and keep in the refrigerator for another time.)
5. Bake Until Crispy
Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and place in the preheated oven or toaster oven and bake until golden brown (10 minutes for a softer garlic bread, 15 minutes for a crispier bread).
6. Cut into Pieces, Garnish and Enjoy
Before serving, place each baguette half on a cutting board and cut into 6 pieces and sprinkle the gluten-free garlic toast with the remaining parsley.
Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks:
- No Baguette? You can either make your own gluten-free baguette or use a store-bought baguette (I love Schar gluten-free baguettes). If you don’t have a French baguette, you can also use hot dog buns, dinner rolls or any other type of gluten-free yeast bread.
- Substitute Butter with Olive Oil: I’ve used vegan butter in this recipe, but a good olive oil will work just as well.
- Use the Air Fryer: You may also toast the garlic bread in an air fryer instead. Simply place the garlic bread slices in a single layer in the preheated air fryer basket and cook at 360F for 10 to 15 minutes.
Recipe FAQs:
To store any leftovers of this gluten-free vegan garlic bread, place the garlic bread in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Toast the bread in the oven to reheat before eating.
Yes you can. To freeze, place the gluten and dairy free garlic bread in a freezer-safe container or freezer-safe bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat the bread in the oven for a few minutes before eating.
Soups to Enjoy with Garlic Bread:
- French Onion Soup (Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free)
- Creamy Tomato Soup (Gluten-Free, Vegan)
- Carrot Turmeric Soup (Gluten-Free, Vegan)

Hi Marisa!
Yay! glad to find another fellow garlic-bread lover! It’s simply the best antidote to a long day, isn’t it?
I’m sure you’ll like it with parsley, not only does it add some vegetables to the snack, it also jazzes up the look of garlic bread by bringing in some green highlights – so they make for a nice party appetizer when friends or family are over!
have a great week!
